5 Reasons To Switch To A Vegan Diet

3 MIN READ • 20th November 2020

We all know that our diets have an impact on the environment. More and more studies and documentaries show us that animal-based products aren’t the best for our health, the environment and animal welfare.

These tips from Jimmy Joy cut through the noise. They’ve whittled it all down to 5 reasons why you should make the switch to veganism now.

These facts are backed up by the science so you understand why you’re putting plant-based food on your plate and can explain away the sceptics.

1. Reduce your environmental impact

Let’s start with some facts. Animal products make up 83% of our carbon footprint and red meat alone accounts for 63%. In fact, a cow produces the same amount of greenhouse gas emissions as 4.5 cars!

Research suggests that if everyone adopted a vegan diet, greenhouse gas emissions could reduce by up to 70%, or up to 50% through a vegetarian diet.

 2. Feel good and stay healthy

Many believe we need meat to survive but no scientific research so far backs this up, but a lot of research does say that meatless diets are healthier. Cardio-metabolic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, obesity, and type 2 diabetes, are the number one cause of death in the world, but almost half of these deaths could be prevented by better nutrition. A plant-based diet is one of the most effective ways to boost your nutrient intake and evidence shows it’s linked to a decreased risk of type 2 diabetes, stroke, and coronary heart disease.

3. Save the lives of animals

We call the animals on our plates by other names like pork, veal and beef so we often forget where our food has come from. Animals feel pain and are capable of consciousness, but many of us are resistant to the idea of reducing our consumption of animal-based products. But we can’t ignore the facts – more than 80 billion animals are raised to be slaughtered for food globally every year.

4. Plant-based food is simply delicious

Nowadays, it’s much easier to eat plant-based because there are a variety of meat alternative options. Some meat alternatives mimic the taste and texture of meat to satisfy your meat craving. For instance, Beyond Meat is completely vegan as it’s made from pea protein. And if you think you’ll miss the ‘bleeding’ juiciness of a burger, the beet juice inside the patty will see to that.

The more people switch to veganism, the better the products will be! Tofu, seitan, and tempeh are also great, especially when you hit them with the right marinades, herbs and spices. We bet you’d be surprised how easy it is once you start.

5. Last but definitely not least, David Attenborough wants you to

And let’s face it – who can say no to that man?
