The onset of midlife can feel daunting; things can shift, and your body will inevitably change. But instead of (metaphorically) running away from these changes, I am choosing to embrace them. And I truly want to help women in their 40s and 50s reframe their thoughts around midlife and what it means.
Midlife can be a beautiful turning point in your life, a time to reset, recalibrate and invest in long-term wellbeing. I recently headed to Longevity Senses Cascais, just outside of Lisbon, to help bring this philosophy to life through a tailored blend of health programmes, restorative spa treatments, and sea air. Here, the focus shifts from quick fixes to sustainable vitality, offering a considered approach to feeling stronger, sharper, and more balanced for the years ahead.
First impressions
I arrived at Longevity Senses Cascais just in time for lunch, fresh off a morning flight from London, and was greeted by bright sunshine and a calming palette of blues and greens. The boutique hotel and spa is undeniably charming – think citrus-hued villas draped in greenery, manicured lawns, a garden yoga dome, and sweeping sea views, all sprinkled with a dash of Portuguese style.

After a warm welcome at reception, I stepped into the serene, blue-toned lounge and instantly felt a world away from London and the toil of city life. My body began to relax and my mind felt clearer, almost like I was ready to slow down and fully embrace a few days of rest, nurture, and nourishment.
What sets Longevity Senses Cascais apart from other hotels and spas is its hybrid concept; it caters equally well for people who are looking for a fully immersive wellness programme and those who simply want a luxurious coastal break, and, of course, for those who would like a little bit of both. As an adults-only hotel, it is very peaceful, surrounded by nature, and perfect for a reset.
Spa and clinic
One of the standout benefits of staying at Longevity Senses Cascais is that all guests have access to the spa and gym facilities. These include a heated indoor pool, outdoor saltwater pool, sensory showers, ice fountain, sauna, steam room, and a well-equipped gym. In addition, there is an impressive clinic and a range of treatment rooms.

For those seeking a structured approach, wellness programmes such as the ‘Art of Detox’, a five- or seven-night experience designed to eliminate toxins, restore balance, and revitalise the body, offer a transformative reset. Alternatively, the more advanced ‘Art of Longevity – Life Optimisation’ programme focuses on preventive medicine, regenerative therapies, and targeted therapeutic rituals.
If a full programme feels like too much, there is also an extensive menu of spa and wellness treatments that can be tailored to your individual needs.
If you are unsure where to begin, here are two treatments I experienced and would highly recommend:
- TESLAChair™ for Pelvic Floor Therapy: A common concern for many women in midlife is weakened pelvic floor muscles. The TESLAChair™ addresses this using advanced Functional Magnetic Stimulation (FMS) technology to strengthen and improve muscle endurance. The treatment is completely pain-free; you simply sit back and let the chair do all the work.
- Seaweed Detoxifying and Draining Wrap: I should start by saying I fell asleep during this treatment – it was that relaxing. This remineralising therapy helps combat cellulite and improve skin elasticity through the use of collagen and mineral salts. After being coated in seaweed paste and wrapped up, I spent 30 minutes on a dry flotation bed and drifted into a deep sleep. When I woke, I genuinely needed a few seconds to remember where I was!
Fresh cuisine
Midlife wellness thrives on a nutrient-dense, whole-food diet, prioritising protein for muscle support, fibre for gut health, and healthy fats for hormonal balance. The hotel’s bright and airy restaurant, Sea Senses, delivers exactly this.

The breakfast buffet offers an abundant selection of vegetables, cheeses, meats, cereals, yoghurts, fresh bread, and detox juices. There is also a hot à la carte menu featuring various egg dishes and oatmeal.
Lunch and dinner elevate Sea Senses into a destination in its own right, with menus centred around freshly caught Atlantic fish, organic meats, and locally sourced ingredients. Head Chef João Cruz brings passion and creativity to every dish. I was fortunate enough to spend time in the kitchen with him, where he showed me how to grill seabass to perfection. His cooking is both innovative and beautifully balanced, and each dish is vibrant and flavoursome.

Accommodation
With interiors redesigned by the renowned Portuguese architecture studio Sá Aranha & Vasconcelos, I knew I was in safe hands. All 38 rooms are classically elegant, with understated sophistication. Some offer direct sea views, while others overlook a delightful courtyard.

My room (number 439 in Villa Abano) featured a south-facing balcony with lovely views over the gardens and towards the sea. It was decked out in luxurious linens and plush pillows, with a spacious bathroom complete with double sinks and indulgent bath products.

As many studies show, midlife women often experience disrupted sleep due to hormonal changes, making rest and recovery all the more important. Needless to say, I slept exceptionally well here. The area is naturally quiet anyway, but with the added soundproof windows and thick blackout curtains, the room felt like my own cocoon.
Final thoughts
Longevity Senses Cascais ticked so many boxes for me. It was exactly what I needed at the right time.
Midlife can feel daunting, but it is also a chance to appreciate how far I have come and to truly care for the body that I am in. Longevity Senses Cascais offered all the benefits of a wellness clinic, but without any of the clinical and sterile feel.
I loved stepping away from the routine of everyday life. Being fully present, with nothing to focus on but the moment, and being looked after by such a warm, professional team felt like a real luxury.

Travel recommendations
● Embrace quiet moments with a touch of indulgence: I brought a Portuguese Sneferu candle with me to enjoy on my balcony in the evenings. The scent (I chose Ficus Purpurea) was beautifully calming and made for a perfect pre-bed ritual. It added a sense of quiet indulgence to the end of each day and became a small but memorable part of my experience.
● Explore the local area on foot: As personal trainer Emilia Pihkala often reminds me, we tend to grow stiffer with age, which can impact our posture. Walking offers a gentle, low-impact way to boost cardiovascular health and ease stress – and with that in mind, the dramatic, windswept Guincho Beach lies roughly an hour’s walk from the hotel along a scenic coastal path. In the other direction, Cascais, a picturesque upscale seaside town, is just a 35-minute walk along the waterfront (the walk is best enjoyed at sunset, when you can watch the sun dip over the ocean as you go).
● Pre-book your transfer for smooth travel: I arranged my airport transfers with Welcome Pickups. The whole experience felt seamless, and having everything pre-booked gave me real peace of mind. I was also lucky to meet some wonderfully friendly drivers, who pointed out the city’s landmarks along the way, helping me get my bearings from the start.
