5 Ways To Survive Running In The Rain

Weather-proof your daily jog with these simple steps from personal trainer Michelle Brewster

  • Odds are you’re going to get sweaty during your run (if not, you’re doing it wrong), and this could damage your trusty jacket. “Most raincoats don’t breathe well, and your sweat will corrode the inner lining,” explains Michelle. “Instead, purchase a lightweight, non-waxy, breathable and weather resistant jacket.” Rain jackets are solely designed to keep water out and focus less on letting moisture escape, a big no-no for us runners.

  • Red, sore and ice cold hands is enough to make us want to hibernate under the duvet when it’s raining, but a good set of running gloves is the only motivation you’ll need to lace up and brave the wet. “Running gloves are essential in the winter,” Michelle says. “It’s important to make sure that they are breathable, as lightweight as possible, and come complete with a wind-deflecting fabric on the back of the hand. Gloves with touch screen compatible fingers make it easy to use your electronics, too.”

  • Your running wardrobe needs to be practical. “Wicking fabrics ensure the moisture is drawn away from your skin, so you stay dry and comfortable,” explains Michelle. “This process allows your body to regulate its temperature naturally and so even during an intense workout, your muscles will be able to function at their optimal temperature.” Don’t let the rain dampen your progress and invest in a coat of weatherproof armour.

  • We love nothing more than pounding the pavements to empowering tunes, but we don’t need a GCSE in science to realise that water and smart phones are not a great mix. With a range of protective sleeves and cases available, never run without zipping your electronics in a trusty waterproof.
    Alternatively, Michelle advises purchasing an on-trend yet practical head accessory. “Many ear muffs or headbands today come with headphones embedded in them, meaning that you can enjoy running to your favourite tunes without losing the feeling in your ears,” she says.

  • Keeping hydrated is a no-brainer when exercising, but cold water is especially important during the wet season. “Drinking cold water regularly in the winter will actually make you warmer as the more water you have in your body, the longer it takes for your core temperature to heat up or cool down,” explains Michelle. Invest in an insulated bottle to keep your water at optimal temperature but prevent your fingers from going numb… even through your protective running gloves.
