Laura Whitmore: “Feeling Good Helps My Confidence”

3 MIN READ • 13th July 2022

Radio presenter, podcast host and best-selling author Laura Whitmore’s schedule is already pretty packed, but there’s always time for fun. Here, she tells how she gets her joy fix and what feels more important now than ever

What’s your current routine?

“It’s hard because every day is a little bit different, if I’m honest, depending on what I’m doing. I’m quite an early riser (up for 7am or before) or sometimes I’m up earlier for work but that’s getting easier now that it’s a little bit brighter and warmer in the morning! If I have a day off then it starts with the dog needing a walk first thing, and coffee definitely starts the day. Then I come back and have breakfast. How I eat varies a lot; there’s a lot of prep in the freezer which is helpful. I’m currently on a shoot today and I’m getting the most beautiful catering so that’s always good when that happens! I’m quite early to bed at the moment because I get up quite early.”

How does exercise factor into your day?

“The dog needs a walk or two a day so I always get my exercise in that way, and just running around with a young family and a busy schedule! My day revolves around looking after them and eating food, really. Sometimes accidental exercise is the best kind, like walking the dog, and just the different things you’ve got to do – that’s my favourite type. I’m not really a gym person, but I love yoga and I can do that anywhere.”

Has your approach to exercise changed over the years?

“It has. I realised in order for me to exercise, it needs to be fun and fit into my day. It can feel scary and sometimes going to gyms can feel a bit daunting, I’ve tried them before in the past, but I love classes. We did a dance class recently with Dare 2b which was really fun! It has to be fun and keep me entertained in some way.”

Does confidence come easily to you?

“No, I don’t think it comes easily to anyone. It comes and goes and I think that’s [the same] for everyone, sometimes someone can be perceived as confident and they’re not really. I think confidence is a difficult word to understand, but sometimes you can fake it ’til you make it and pretend you’re confident and other people will think you are – that’s got me through a lot of sticky situations especially during interviews and live television in the past! But feeling good helps my confidence, and what I’m wearing and if I feel comfortable in it depending on what I’m doing is very important.”

When can you be most yourself?

“Hopefully all the time! I hope I’m myself most of the time, because it’s harder to be anyone else.”

How important is it to have some me time? Do you find it easy to carve out time for yourself?

“Me time is very important – I love a bath! You’re away from your phone, you can lock the door, light a candle and have a bubble bath and a glass of wine or cup of tea in there. I’m a big fan of eating in the bath, so that’s my little ritual for myself.”

Do you have any advice for your younger self?

“Don’t stress, it will all work out. Things that feel like a big issue now won’t; time is a great healer.”

What would you like to do more of?

“I have a lot of fun and I’d like to have more! You can never have enough fun, but I feel very lucky that what I do brings me joy.”

Is there anything that feels more important now than ever?

“Family, friends, the people around you and surrounding yourself with good people, your team and your tribe is very important.”

What can you tell us about your third edit with sportswear brand Dare2b?

“I started working with Dare2b in lockdown time when I was living in activewear, and it’s really nice to have fun with it, especially with some of the pieces and the prints that we use. They’re not too threatening, some people are scared of bright colours and would prefer to wear all black to the gym, but it’s nice to mix it up with a few different patterns!”

How would you like someone to feel wearing one of your pieces from the edit?

“I’d want someone to feel joy, content and confident in wearing something that makes them feel good. I do think what you wear can affect your mood, but you don’t want to think about it too much either – you don’t want to be feeling self-conscious about your body, you just want to be wearing something and not have to think about it and get on with your busy day!”

Quick-fire questions

A wellness hack that’s changed your life?

“I’m always a bit wary of hacks, but with exercise, we don’t realise how much we can exercise in a day as we’re constantly on the move. So, technically, I exercise most of the day! Whether it’s walking the dog, or running around my house trying to find my lost phone! That’s being active and that’s the biggest hack that I realised. Exercise is everything that you do.”

Being healthy is…

“Feeling good about yourself, that’s what healthy is. It’s not just physical either – it can be mental. It’s how you feel and not how other people feel about you.”
